Mara’s POV The forest had returned to its deceptive calm, but the lingering adrenaline still pulsed through my veins, making it impossible to think clearly. My lungs burned from running, from shifting, from the fight, and yet the bond throbbed in my chest like a living heartbeat—Dresden’s heartbeat echoing against mine. Every step I took beside him was a reminder that he wasn’t just a memory or a phantom of my past; he was real, dangerous, and more alive than I had ever allowed myself to admit.

An uncomfortable silence stretches between us. Finally, I meet his gaze. “I didn’t plan any of this. I just… didn’t want to go home yet.” His expression softens slightly. “Running from something?” I remain silent. “How did you manage to get into a racing arena so easily?” He turns fully towards me before glancing back at his phone as if to verify his suspicions. “It looked like you even participated in a race. The hell, Meeka?” My heart races, and sweat begins to bead on my forehead.

Morris offers. -"Let's go." We exchange a knowing look before racing down the hall, pushing each other aside to get to the 'finish line' like kids. A race where the first person to make it out of the mansion and shift wins. This has always been our childhood mood breaker. Our friendship is still growing strong despite our ranks. As expected, I won. As soon as my feet touch the ground outside the door, I shift into my wolf. I turn around to mock Morris for his loss, but I am met with widened eyes and a slightly parted mouth from him.

Typical. “Keep up!” I snarl, snapping my head back for a second. “I will not lose because of you lazy brats!” “We’re trying!” Gwen pants, almost tripping over her own foot. “Try harder. Or drop out now and save me the embarrassment.” River and Luan, running like wolves through the shadows, say nothing. Good. They understand. This is no time for complaints. It’s the first leg of the tournament, fifty kilometers through Fenrath’s wilds—dense forests, twisting gorges, mountains that split the sky. It’s meant to crush the weak. And I refuse to be crushed.

With that, he ran off to the track. Literally, chill ran down my spine. I felt goosebumps sprouting on my skin. Did he just ask me to scream his name? Kael fucking know how to mess with me. Throughout the race, I couldn't focus. My mind was racing and Kael was the one with the wheel. It was as if I was the car he was driving. My heart was the engine, pounding like crazy in my chest. One second, Kael was neck and neck with some other hot-headed racer in a matte red Mustang. The next, he shot ahead like a bullet, dust and noise trailing behind him as he claimed the win.

I head into the direction of the center of the forest where the traps we will use to our advantage awaits. I can hear them behind me, their undeniable scent of mud and grass the marking of a Rager. They are drawing close, planning how to capture me and in this moment I realize just how many Ragers there are hunting me. I can feel my heart pounding as six distinctive howls sound and an emotion I have not felt in a long time settles into the pit of my stomach.

Aryn I stormed down the path, my fists balled so tight my nails dug into my palms. The sound of of Marcus’s fall was still echoing in my ears. The bastard, Brandon, thought this was a fucking game.
