Jacob approached again with two pack warriors carrying his bags, massive trunks and duffels that suggested a stay far longer than a week. “Wow,” I muttered. “That’s… a lot.” Jacob beamed. “A man must be prepared. You never know how long you’ll stay when you’re surrounded by good company.” Aric barked, “You’re staying one week.” Jacob laughed. “Sure.” “That wasn’t a negotiation.” “We’ll see.” Aric stepped forward, shoulders squared, dominance rolling off him like thunder. “Jacob. I am the Alpha here. You follow my rules.” Jacob’s smile didn’t falter. “Of course, cousin. Whatever you say.”

Today is going to be hectic. They wore the D’Arvenzi colors, black and crimson, the shade of blood spilled in elegance. Their acting Alpha, Ronan D’Arvenzi, walked at the head, flanked by three sentinels, all lean, sharp-eyed wolves who reeked of arrogance and perfectly masked menace. The robe was heavy—dark blue velvet with silver embroidery depicting pack history. Moons and wolves and trees intertwined in intricate patterns. Beautiful and weighty, both literally and symbolically. "I'll see you at the ceremony," Thomas said. "Until then, prepare yourselves. Meditate. Center. This is the last day of your old lives."

The alphas are waiting for me in the lobby, each of them dressed in blue shirts and black pants with the Fall Mountain pack symbol on the chest, at heart level. I've seen the symbol around the house on random things, it's a mountain with wolves running in a circle around it, and the middle is full of stars. Boys seem imposing, frightening, and to me, a comfort. Trey is there too, looking just as nervous as everyone else. "Can't you tell her you're moving or something?" Then it stops, right? he asks, stepping in front of the alphas to greet me first. His voice is nothing but upset and my chest hurts.
