Zaerath screamed very loudly of Pure rage. He raised both hands and the sky opened up. Bolts of lightning came down like rain. Not one or two. Dozens. Hundreds. They struck the ground all around Kaelithra, exploding stone and throwing dirt into the air. The courtyard became a minefield of craters and smoke.

“You should’ve thought of that before you made me your weapon.” A crack ran through the void. Silver light spilled outward like molten glass. Maelis’s face hardened. “Enough.” She raised her hand. The dark surged behind her, forming a tidal wave of shadows that rushed toward Serenya. Instinct took over — Serenya threw her arms up, her sigil blazing through her skin. Gold light met black fire with a deafening roar. The impact sent both women flying backward through the airless expanse. Serenya crashed into the light web, gasping. The threads burned against her skin, but she clung to them, forcing herself upright. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, matching the rhythm of the light.
