Some truths were better left in the shadows until the time was right. Back in town, Trixie sat in front of the mirror in Jerica’s room, carefully dabbing a bit of glitter onto her cheeks. The room was buzzing with excitement and laughter as the girls got ready for the Halloween party at the Great Wolf Club. Music played from a speaker in the corner, and the smell of pizza mixed with body spray and hair products. Each of them wore a different color tutu and matching shirt with a big white “m” on the front—homemade M&M costumes that had turned out better than any of them expected.

A maid came in carrying a garment like a piece of tacky theater: garish sequins, colors that clashed with my skin, straps that promised exposure and laughter. It was the sort of thing that flashed obscene under a spotlight and had no place outside a stage. “Take it off,” Veronica said, eyes on me with a hound’s patience. “Change into that. You’ll look the part.”

I threw the door open. “Hey Jesse! I was just coming to leave a flyer for you guys, we’re having a party tomorrow night,” Miranda said, handing me a slip of paper. “It’s a costume theme! I’m going to be little red riding hood,” she said, giggling. Oh yeah, Halloween. His shirt opened slightly to show a small section of his chest. Brown curly hair peeked out, beckoning a woman’s touch. The urge to touch this man was overpowering and her hand started to move toward him. With a jerk she pulled her hand back, looking at him, afraid of what it was he wanted.

I twist the cap off and take a long, greedy gulp, the water sliding down my throat, cooling me down like the metal bottle itself. From the corner of my eye, a silhouette darkens the entrance. I turn my head towards it. Maureen leans casually against the doorframe, watching us. She’s dressed in loose black pants that hug her ankles tightly at the cuffs, paired with a simple black tank top that shows off toned arms. Her hair is pulled back into an elegant French twist, not a strand out of place despite the casual posture. She smiles at me, pushes off the door, and steps fully inside. “There you are,” she says warmly.

Among the plates, glasses and the large tray full of pancakes in the center of the table, there were papier-mâché, glitter and very small flower petals, probably because they were the only ones that Millicent was tall enough to reach in the garden.
