The mechanic swallowed hard, glancing around as if the walls might be listening. “I’ll tell you everything,” he whispered, “but not here. Meet me at the pub tomorrow night. I’ll explain then.” I stared at him for a long moment, weighing his words. He was scared, that much was clear. But scared of what? Or who? I couldn’t let this go, not when Annalise and the duke’s lives were at stake.

“No, I mean, I called my… my… my-“ He smiled at the moment he realized how nervous she was. “Don’t worry, I’m not trying to rob you,” he raised up his hands. “Listen, I’m a mechanic. Here you can see me,” he turned to let her see the car oil printed on his overall, “I can show you my toolbox. Really, I’m a mechanic.”

“No. Everything is fine. Just put the car up for sale, please, okay? I need the money as soon as possible” The mechanic looked at Chike. He had always admired Chike’s strength. He needed no one to tell him that Chike was going through hard times, he wished Chike would confide in him. Probably he could help. “You said you are not in your house, how would I reach you?” Chike hesitated. “I’ll… I’ll be coming here from time to time” “No” the mechanic put his hand in his pocket and removed a phone which had a small antenna attached to its top. “Take this phone; you can use it to reach me”

“Quick! I need to go back to the game!” “Nik, stop it! You’re injured!” I ignored Wade again. The mechanic looked at me with a terrified expression on his face. “I’m sorry, sir. I think we need to change—” “Are you fcking playing with me? I just used that fcking car and it ran fcking fine until the fcking tire exploded!” I growled at him like a mad wolf. “Fix it now! I will not fcking lose to anyone in any fcking way, bastard!”

“You did okay.” He nodded eagerly, hoping for some mercy. “Thank you, sir. Please… don’t come back.” I smirked. “Don’t worry, I won’t. But remember this—if I find out you breathed a word about us, I’ll come back for you.” I pointed to the dead man again. “And I’ll make sure you end up just like him.” The mechanic nodded so hard I was worried his head might come off. “I’ll make a run for it boss.”

I matter-in-factly said. “Do not compare me to her but thank you for saying that,” Max growled his complaint and compliment. “See! Now is there any way to talk to your Alpha?” I said, tapping his nose. Max was just about to open his mouth to say something snarky no doubt, however, something fell on my shoulders that caused me to stop. Whatever it was left a grease stain on my fury jacket. I noticed something on the ground and bent down to investigate, but was interrupted when I felt liquid on the back of my neck.

Gale-force winds and torrential rain battered the flight deck, but inside the drop bay, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Three mechs stood at the edge of the open bay doors. Two were the new Mark VII "Vanguard" Twin Mechs, their sleek, aerodynamic chassis pulsing with a ghostly cyan nanolaminate glow. Behind them stood Jack in his heavily upgraded Mark VI Defender mech, looking like a walking fortress.

The mecha's strength and speed increased, the density of its outer armor increased, and even the mecha's weight increased. "Menu." The mechanic greets us, tools already in hand, and starts inspecting the engine. Time drags. Each passing minute makes the evening darker, colder, heavier. The streetlights flicker on one by one, and I can feel tension pooling in my chest. “Looks like it’s more complicated than I thought,” the mechanic says finally. “It’s going to take a while. You’d better come back tomorrow.”
