Tommas said in a low voice. “Off the books?” I asked. Michael leaned forward, his excitement already palpable. He wanted revenge as much as I did and being given free rein ‘off the books’ was as good as being given a license to kill whoever we had to in order to keep Beatrice safe. I could practically see his mouth-watering. “Off the books,” Tommas agreed. I nodded and stood, Michael behind me. I didn’t wait for Tommas to change his mind, I went back to my desk and grabbed my phone, Michael walked in and sat in one of my chairs beside me, silently watching and waiting for what I would say next.

She contemplated her next move. So far, all had gone according to plan: soon McCleod would be one of hers, of her kind, and he would be putty in her hands. He had vowed to do as she wished, and she would call in the vow. Then, finally, they could execute their plan. Kyle and Rynd had been smart to come up with this: the vampires here would never expect an attack from within their own island, a human attack from within their own ranks. We went through several rooms, into a kitchen and then down some stairs. It was a basement of sorts. Florida didn't really have basements, but it was a sunken room. Small windows were high up near the ceiling but covered with something black. No light would get in during the day. The lights were low and spot-lighted a couch and some chair

"Yea, pick that up from a friend," "I see. Well W.I.K.D will kill you on sight, and your little doing last night has upped the security, you can't get in without being ID, but don't worry about that, just fall in the line of nomads going into the city. I will cover your ass to get in, getting out is all on you. The city is filled with tunnels, I suggest you use them," "I don't even know where they are—" "I will be in your ears," he set down a small microphone in my palm,

"But what does this have to do with Michael? Why did you disappear? Why didn’t you come to us sooner?" Michael’s face twisted with shame. "Because I thought I could fix it. I thought I could stop it by writing the book. But I was wrong. The more I wrote, the deeper I got, the closer I came to uncovering the truth. And then... then I started seeing things. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t think. I could feel it—the presence. It was like it was watching me, waiting. It’s been trying to take me for years, but I didn’t realize how close I was to the edge until it was too late."

Michael said, looking worried. He grabbed a new ice pack and replaced the old one with it. “I’m just getting a little bored, and I’d like to take my mind off of everything that happened today,” I admitted. “I understand,” Michael said, clearly thinking of a way to distract and entertain me. “What about reading?” I asked. “What if I read to you?” Michael responded. I nodded with a small smile. Michael left the room and returned a few minutes later with a few different books, presumably from his den lined with bookshelves.

Groaning Michael opened his eyes and felt relieved for a moment as he found himself free from the net and sat and thanked the heavens knowing the fall wasn't high or else he would have broken a couple of bones. Slowly standing up Michael sighed and brushed his clothes but took a couple of steps back in surprise as... . . . To be continued... .
