Then— A distant roar echoed through the mountains. Not a wolf. Something mechanical. The ground began to tremble. My stomach dropped. “What is that?” The hunter leader grinned. “You’ll see.” Kael shifted back into human form, his silver eyes scanning the dark forest. His expression hardened. “They brought vehicles.” Marcus growled.

Perched in the low branches, I keep still and do my best not to make any noise, watching as Milo conceals himself in a cluster of bushes. I see right away that what he’s particularly skilled at is keeping himself out of sight. I almost lost track of him myself. If I hadn’t seen him go into the bushes, I wouldn’t know he was there. It must have been a skill that proved very useful to him when he was living on his own, with no one to watch his back.

I had only seen Mildred and Garren shift, so this was new. Hunter wasn’t nearly as big as Garren, but he was bigger than Mildred. His scales looked rougher, and he had spikes lining his back along his spine. His talons were longer than the others, and his wings looked like they were tipped with ice shards. “Hunter is the last of his kind,” Mildred said low enough for only me to hear. “He’s beautiful. He looks like he is covered in pieces of ice.” I said in awe. She let out a laugh.

They crept forward, their weapons at the ready, until they caught sight of Tate standing in a clearing, his massive form silhouetted against the moonlit sky. Without hesitation, the hunters opened fire, their silver bullets ripping through the air and striking Tate with deadly force. Tate came to realize at that moment that he had been on a bad path for so long and barely escaped from the hunters. He went back home to his brother, and Marcus gladly allowed him take back his place knowing that he really had changed.
