My gaze drifts higher, genuinely puzzled by how a bright moon could shine almost every single night when the sun barely shows itself during the day. In Science class we'd been taught that the moon shines by reflecting the sunlight. Maybe in this world, it just doesn't count. For the past four nights, that moon had become my quiet companion. Somehow, I’d discovered it eased the heat stage for me. Since then, I’ve taken to sleeping on the balcony, letting the cool moonlight wash over my skin and dull the burning inside. A soft knock at the door pulls my attention away from my thoughts. Shawn? But Shawn doesn't knock.

I shook my head, too confused to speak. “Because the last time a lunar eclipse appeared here, something extraordinary happened. A bond formed between two wolves, marked by the moon herself. We call it "Midnight's Mark". It has not appeared in one hundred and twenty-three years. Most think it’s legend, but I saw it when I was young.” My mouth felt dry. “What kind of bond?” “The truest kind, a mate bond chosen by the Moon Goddess herself, marked on the skin at the eclipse’s peak. Those who bear it are destined for each other, their souls matched perfectly. Such bonds appear only when the pack needs them most.”

I look towards Lily and she nods her head at me, “yes, let’s go.” The four of us made our way to my office in silence, nobody said a word. As my office door closed Jason blurted out, "Midnight killed Hades and is the rightful ruler of the underworld!” “What?” I say, unsure of what I just heard. “It’s- it’s true,” Midnight says quietly, “I held the sword of Demoirta in my hands… and I killed him with it.” I hear Lily gasps slightly before she pulls Midnight into her arms.

“What does it say?” ‎ ‎He opened it fully, and I saw the same red ink. The same messy handwriting. And the same jagged sun symbol burned into the corner. ‎ ‎My throat closed. ‎ ‎Then he read it out loud. ‎ ‎“Give us the girl by midnight.” ‎ ‎The world tilted. ‎ ‎Midnight. ‎That was only a few hours away. ‎ ‎I grabbed the edge of the desk beside me because my legs genuinely forgot how to do their job. ‎

//Heaven Black// I was walking peacefully in the hallway when I saw a familiar figurine walking towards me. Oh no, Am I seeing things? The girl smirk at me. A devilish smirk. "Nope. You are not hallucinating bitch." Midnight said with her thick bitchy accent. I look at her while my mouth is hanging open. Midnight pout before using her long bloody nails to close my open mouth. "No, no, no don't give me that shock look Darling." Who wouldn't be shock to see her here?

Midnight My name is Midnight. I was born exactly at midnight, on December 29, 2002. My last name is Lipovsky, although it should be Vosse, but that's a story for another day. I am 20 years, 4 months and 2 days old. And I'm a bit weird.

Hannah sits between Parker and I, and we both hold her hands. “And so it was one of the darkest and coldest midnights on record. There weren’t many packs in this area at the time, really only a few small ones. Including a band of ten males that called themselves Midnight Run. The storm seemed to come out of absolutely nowhere, catching the males off guard. They fought the wind and did all they could to secure what little belongings they had. But it was far too great a blizzard, and it brought with it more than the elements.

I whispered with a loving smile, "which story would you like tonight?" Mathew's face lit up with excitement, his tiny hands reaching for his favorite book. "The one about the brave little wolf, Mumma!" I chuckled as I opened the book, a captivating story about a young wolf's grand adventure. Mathew listened with rapt attention, his eager eyes fixed on the pages as I spun the tale of bravery and exploration. By the time I reached the part where the little wolf found solace under the silvery glow of the moon, my son was already fast asleep.

So she stopped him before he could say anything else. "Okay. So what happened Kara?" Martin resigned, now asking Kara. Kara saw his stepmom's sharp stare and so was Kendra's glare. She just nodded her head. "We were just playing there Dad, I fell on my back. Maybe Kendra thought that the wall crumbled. And I just fell asleep then." she said, trying not to recall the horrifying image of the monster who wanted to eat her alive and whole. Kendra smirked upon hearing Kara's story. Now, she's safe again.

At least in the stories I read, they waited till midnight. "Hello, who's there?" I heard nothing but some distinct creaking and scraping. I tried again. "Helloo...? I know how this works. I'll come looking for you, and you will kill me." I muttered like an idiot. All the candles were blown out, but moonlight peeked through the tall window at the end of the hallway. A prickle of unease crept up my spine as I stepped out, barefoot, toward the window. I shouldn't be this stupid to chase the source of these unsettling sounds but how could I sleep without feeling secure?
