“No,” I said slowly, my heart thudding unevenly. “I saw him. I saw Edric. He pulled me up.”
Adrien frowned and leaned forward, bracing his elbows on his knees. The lantern light caught in his whiskey-colored eyes, and for the briefest moment, there was no mockery in them — just something unreadable, heavier.
“You were half-conscious,” he said quietly. “That sea… it plays tricks. Shows you what you want to see before it kills you. That’s why it’s forbidden.”
