Gold runes pulsed faintly on the cover. “The Breeding Grimoire,” he said, voice low and resonant. “A medieval fertility text. It demands a full ritual enactment to neutralize its power. You will read the incantations aloud while I perform the rites. The book requires multiple offerings — deep, thorough breeding — until the magic is sated. Do not stop reading, no matter how full or overwhelmed you become.”

It was one of the very few things my mother left for me. "Well?" Grace snapped, "Are you going to stare at it all day?" I glared at her and returned my gaze to the book. The words were not written with ink, or maybe they were, I couldn’t tell, but there were faint engravings of silver around each letter. They shimmered, Like my powers, the threads. "You're holding it wrong." "Huh?" I frowned at her. She glanced at the grimoire, then back at me, "You're holding it wrong," she repeated, irritation in her voice.

Inside was a velvet-wrapped ledger bound in faded red leather. The Ember Grimoire. It was a chronicle—half memoir, half confession—written in delicate script by Eleanor Montrose. I caught a glint of metal in my eye and just as I turned, Damion was bringing down a dagger to my heart.

Gwen nods, placing the book on the ground, and backing away. My mouth tastes bitter and I swallow down tears. Doing this means I'll never be able to rescue Jacques. The grimoire is what I used to bring Ben and Kiarr over to my world and it's the only thing I know that will give me a chance to bring Jacques back after what happened in the leyline. I kneel in front of the book, my soul breaking into a thousand jagged pieces that pierce my heart. Wounds that I know no spell and no amount of time will ever heal.
