Miranda Cross. The room erupted in applause. “Miranda,” Victor said, pulling her close, “is the reason I’ve been able to push through the darkest days. She is my muse, my strength, my… first love.” The applause turned into gasps, then laughter, the ugly kind that comes from those who smell scandal and savor it. Liana’s world tilted. The glass in her hand trembled, threatening to shatter. But her face—her face remained calm, porcelain smooth. Years of being ignored had trained her well.

She hadn’t cried after they argued and she hadn’t cried all day Friday when Lauren didn’t call to apologize and she wasn’t about to cry now. Lauren was not going to make her cry. Lauren was just a teeny tiny pathetic loser who still went around on her bike like a baby. She didn’t even have breasts yet. She was still a child. But Miranda was a woman, and she had a lover to prove it. Miranda carefully shaved her legs and underarms—she’d started doing so at the first hint of fuzz about a year ago, and she shaved every single day without fail. The idea of someone catching her with stubble on her legs was too embarrassing to contemplate.

I used to train under General Lloyd.” Miranda smiled and shook her hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m Miranda Stone.”

Miranda replied, surprising me, I thought she was going to yell at Serene. “Is that how to greet your employer's fiancé?” Serene questioned. Here she goes again, crossing the line. “Serene don't!” I said to her, knowing fully well she was trying to create a scene. “Hi Serene, I am Miranda, your fiancé's new personal assistant,” Miranda said with a slight smile on her face before going back to what she was doing. “She's not my fiancée,” I said, trying to make things clear. Miranda didn't even bother to respond, she was hellbent on finishing the paperwork I gave her.

But what did the asshole do wrong now?" "Only you would call a man like him an asshole," Tory cut her sister a glare. "I think she takes advantage because she's married to a psychopath," I deduced but, to be honest, Miranda was a fierce woman. She proved it the day I walked in and found a dead body at her feet because she had saved herself when she was kidnapped, not waiting for someone to rescue her like some damsel in distress.
