They laughed, the sound grating against my nerves. I glanced their way, locking eyes with one of them for a moment too long. He quickly turned back to his buddy, trying to act like he hadn’t just been caught.
The officer I was following knocked on a door and peered his head in. “Penny, the golden boy is here.”
“Don’t call him that,” Penny rebuked.
She came outside and regarded me for a second. “Hello, I appreciate you coming in today. Come right in and we’ll get started.”
