As my mother spoke, Sofia emerged from the red room, her movements slow and deliberate. My mother's eyes widened slightly, then softened. She immediately stepped forward, pulling Sofia into a warm embrace. "Sofia, darling," she said, her voice filled with affection. "It's so good to see you."
She held Sofia at arm's length, her brow furrowing. "But you seem… unwell. What's wrong, dear?"
Sofia forced a weak smile. "Nothing, Mother," she lied, her voice barely a whisper. "Just a bit tired."
