She smelled of the sea and the lilies, a scent that meant more to me than any kingdom.
“You came back,” she whispered, her hands finding my hair, her touch light and tentative.
“I always come back,” I said, pulling back to look at her. “But we have to move. The South has sent a new kind of monster, Winnie. And they are not here for the light. They are here for the land.”
“Leo told me,” she said, her eyes shifting to the smoke on the horizon. “He says they are machines. That they do not use the frequency. They use the force.”
