The ground shook with every step of the monster. The shadow-beast towered over the circle, its massive claws sinking into the earth, leaving behind deep burns where darkness clung. Its head lowered, glowing red eyes fixed on Damien, its mouth dripping with black mist that hissed like acid. Damien growled deep in his chest, the sound rolling through the air like thunder. His golden eyes locked on the beast, his fur bristling as power surged through him. Around him, the loyal wolves pulled back, leaving space, knowing this fight belonged to their Alpha alone.

Out of the mist came a monster. Distorted. Scrambled. It moved like a man but walked like a terror. Its jaw was open, unhinged, its flesh a mass of blistered skin. Black ichor seeped from its fingers—fingers that once belonged to a human. Krishna moved forward, over Ignatius's protest. The monster hissed and ran at her. She held up her hand—and fire responded. It wasn't fire. It was white and hotter than fire, streaked with violet and gold, old and angry. It hit the beast in mid-thrust, burning it to ash in a shriek that resonated for miles.

His eyes are entirely pitch black, and he doesn’t look the slightest bit bothered even as Vanya chokes and sputters, her shaking fingers desperately trying to push his boot off. “I don’t hit women, Vanya. But I fight monsters and crush them because I can. And you…you’re just another breed of monster. The kind that is destined to die by my hands.” She coughs up blood, struggling to breathe. Her eyes are bigger than I’ve ever seen them, bulging in their sockets. She looks…terrified. Slowly, he moves his feet off her throat, and she chokes. I watch as he crouches in front of her, staring at her with a blank look on his face.

I whispered as the sun began to peek over the FUTO horizon, painting the campus in shades of rose and gold. He looked at me, and for the first time in fifty-five chapters, the shadows were gone from his eyes. He leaned in, kissing me with a softness that made the world stand still. You have bigger problems. Before I could inquire what he meant, the ground cracked open. A roar echoed through the air as a huge monster emerged from the breach. It was greater than anything I'd ever seen, with a hideous form made of darkness and flame. Its eyes were bright red, and its claws shone like polished obsidian. Eric did not hesitate. He surged forward, his golden light piercing the darkness like a sword. But the beast was too swift. It swiped at him, and Eric just escaped, sliding to the side as its claws tore into the earth.

Always watching. “Forgive me,” I whisper. Then I reach. First, Rhett. The bond between us is a chain of fire, thrumming, pulling. I seize it with both hands, drag, and feel his strength surge into me. My limbs grow heavier, more solid. My heartbeat turns wolf-fast, wild, a predator’s rhythm. My skin burns hot as flame, my muscles harden as though carved from the storm itself. The first monster comes barreling from the dark—an oni with skin like granite, tusks dripping blood. There’s no way this is a natural being. “Look for weaknesses!” Lucas shouts, right in the center of the clearing. The monster whirls on him, swiping those jagged claws out in an effort to shred my mate to ribbons. Lucas is quick, though, and he dodges. He and his men attack with lethal precision, darting around the creature, but they’re not fast enough. The monster swings its hand out, and two men fly through the air. Lucas moves. He doesn’t hesitate and leaps onto the monster’s back. A flash of silver in the dim light, a squelch of metal sinking into flesh, and a roar of pain ring in the air.

"Cameron Stuart! Just how much more trouble are you trying to cause me!" Natalie Parker's shrill voice rang in my ears, jolting me awake. The moment I opened my eyes, I saw her raising a bottle of sulfuric acid to splash it on me. Recalling the unbearable agony that overwhelmed me in my previous life, I instinctively reached out to grab the bottle. Still, some of the liquid splashed out anyway, dripping onto my body. I gasped in pain. After exhaling deeply, I clenched my jaw and caught Natalie by the wrist. "Are you mad? You can kill someone if you throw an entire bottle of sulfuric acid at them!
