I looked at her , this small, clever, warm little girl , and something in me went very quiet and very sharp at the same time. Because right there at the back of her neck, as her curls shifted in the draft from the open door, I saw it. A birthmark. Small and pale. In the shape of a crescent moon. Exactly like the one my daughter was born with. My breath stopped completely.
