The moon hung low in the sky, casting its silvery light over the sprawling grounds of Lycan Keep. Kate stood at the edge of the forest, her heart pounding in her chest as she gazed out into the night. It had been months since she had arrived at the keep, months filled with challenges and triumphs, love and loss. But now, as she stood on the brink of a new beginning, she knew that everything had led her to this moment. Beside her stood Elias, his hand warm against hers as he turned to face her, his eyes reflecting the light of the moon. "Are you ready?" he asked softly, his voice a gentle murmur in the stillness of the night.

More than half of it looked like it was made of glass, all wide, tinted windows, and open sliding doors. Clara, Alex, and Maxwell neared the grounds. Students huddled together in a circle around a huge floating diamond crystal, carved with intricacy and a lot of jagged corners. Bright energy was encased inside, it pulsed as if breathing in air. And in every beat was a wave of gentle push like how the sea wave gently lapped the shore. Next to Clara, a girl squealed. As she squeezed her friend by the shoulder and rambled words in a whisper, Clara traced the girl’s line of sight where she spotted an older man next to the school staff during the orientation—the one that had horns and hooves.

The high ceiling was covered with black cloth, which would be luminated by light projector, making it look like a sky full of stars. Olive was raving about it this morning, but she couldn’t help after school because she had to take her mother to the clinic. So, she listed all the stuffs that needed to be done today and sent it to me. It just seemed different somehow. He was back a moment later with two champagne flutes and a bottle of champagne. Then he poured each of us a glass and handed me one, then sat in the corner of the sofa, taking me in. “Brenna, I’m sorry I couldn’t give you a big wedding. But after the Blood Moon is over—”

It was different but I immediately looked away. Ignoring it. Mara leaned toward me. “So…” I looked at her. “What’s your poison?” I frowned. “My what?” She laughed. “What kind of alcohol do you drink?” “Oh.” I shrugged awkwardly. “I don’t really drink often.” Mara grinned. “Perfect.” That somehow worried me. She disappeared behind the counter before returning with a small glass filled with clear liquid. She pushed it toward me. “What’s this?” “Moonshine.” I eyed it suspiciously, then slowly lifted the glass. The smell alone nearly made me regret everything.

By now, everyone remained silent, not even bothering to help me out. "You're on a fucking roll tonight, aren't you, doll-face?" he asked, his eyes raging with anger as he held the empty glass that I was still holding as well. "Perhaps you're forgetting your fucking place!" he spat with venom in his voice as I felt the intensity of his grip on the glass getting stronger.

Luna stood at the Scorchmark's center. Cassian three feet to her right. Both of them watching the dark new moon sky. And then— *Midnight.* The black glass beneath their feet *breathed.* One slow exhalation. As though the earth itself had been holding it. The Scorchmark's veins of old light—those traces of ancient battle energy embedded in the glass—illuminated. Softly. Then brighter. Red-gold spreading outward from the center like blood moving through a body coming back to life.

Then her phone buzzed. She looked down. A text from an unknown number. You shouldn't have touched it. She typed back: Who is this? The response came in less than three seconds. Someone who knows what you are. The lights flickered. Luan looked up. The fluorescents buzzed, dimmed, then blazed back to full strength. The clock on the wall read 5:51 AM. Her phone buzzed again. The moon is in eighteen days. You need to be ready.

I pointed out. Gideon nodded. I looked down then, noticing for the first time that he was holding a bottle of red wine and two glasses. “The moon is still full,” he said, tilting his head toward the window at the end of the hall where the light was already coming through in a thick silver shaft across the floor. “It’s technically waning,” I said. “Just looks full.”
