I worried that we’d tracked in soil from our escape through the tunnel and then across the forest floor, but when I looked at my sneakers, they looked clean enough to curb my concerns. I was just about to ask where the heck we were going inside this seemingly never-ending mansion when my mother stopped at a set of double doors and quietly knocked. The doors slowly swung open - manned by no one in particular - to display a brilliantly lit, Louis IVX styled room. It was breathtakingly splendid. The walls were a rich cranberry with gilded trim. Ancient portraits of unknown faces were strategically hung with a small light mounted just below each one to illuminate the image with a soft glow.

Amnisty greeted them with a smile on her face making her cute chubby cheeks popped out. “Thank you,” Clandes replied cheerfully while Mauvais responded with a low voice. “Clandes.” All of them turned to Amavus who just went out of his room. He was bringing a book, My Journey Beyond My Imagination. The cover was removed. Clandes’ eyes widened and she came closer to him immediately to get the book but Amavus threw the book to the fireplace. “Honey!” Tina exclaimed, she didn’t know what was book all about.

The mansion was a maze designed by a psychopath. I was running through the hallway and my heels were slipping on the polished floor. I was supposed to be at dinner five minutes ago but I couldn't find the damn room. Anya wasn't there to guide me and every door looked exactly the same…tall, heavy, and expensive. Where is the food in this house? I turned a corner and almost slammed into a suit of armor. I cursed under my breath. "Stupid rich house and its stupid layout," I hissed. I was sweating in the black silk dress and the journal in my waistband was digging into my skin. I finally saw a set of double doors that were slightly open. I pushed through them and I stopped.

My fingers run along the scribble feeling how hard he must have pushed the pen into the paper. When I flip the page, my jaw falls. “Harvest Moon.” Then there is a horribly drawn picture of what I’m guessing is a red wolf. My eyes water, thinking back over what memories I’ve gained with the help of the witches. It isn’t anywhere near enough though. I need Skip, in front of me to get answers. The next few pages are somewhat nonsensical, but a puzzle I’m determined to break. I take the book back out to the living room area, where I pace the room staring at the pages.

She asked, obviously trying to shift the conversation. “Well I was searching for you. I got lost and I stumbled upon the mansion's library.” I replied. “It must have been stressful.” “It was, but luckily someone directed me to your room. I also found a book in the library.” “What book?” “Midnight Howls by Orin Darkhowl.” I replied. “Let me guess, you need me to get the book out of the library for you. So that you can read it each time you come to my room.”

He raised an eyebrow as he watched her pick up one of the books she had brought with herself. “Up!” she asked when she stopped in front of him, making Massimo pull her onto his lap, where Millicent showed him the cover of the small book, where there was a princess dressed in yellow and something that looked like a lion on two paws “This is the story of Beauty and the Beast. You already read it to me to sleep, remember?” “Uh... Is that the one where the girl lived in a tower?” he tried to guess, but that only made Millie’s cheeks puff up again.

“Yes. Every maid must pass through me. They need to learn loyalty, discipline, and the ability to follow without delay. This mansion does not welcome slow minds. Do you understand?” Harsh, I thought, but he wasn’t entirely wrong. “Yes. It means this mansion won’t accept slow-minded maids who can’t quickly grasp commands.” “Correct.” We reached a massive wooden door. He pushed it open, and my eyes widened. It was breathtaking. The library stretched wide, its shelves climbing toward the ceiling, even reaching into a second floor. Rows upon rows of books, polished wooden tables in the center, and study corners along the sides—it felt less like a private library and more like a grand public one.
