During the winter all that became almost one hundred percent inactive. Because winter is considered in religion to be the time of mourning for the Moon Goddess, very few things worked well during the weeks when snowflakes fell almost daily. All the religion and respect for the Great Mother's pain meant that studies, some jobs, and almost all socialization, especially of the elite, took a significant break. It was a time of peace, where all that happened, at least in the big mansions, were family meals and little socializing.

Then, the serving woman added, “Soon, the winter winds will arrive; they’re expected by the end of the month. You should make the most of your time, as once those winds come, people won’t leave their homes.” “Is it really that bad? I thought winter had already started,” Triana said. The woman shook her head. “We’re just entering winter. The sky is still clear, and the temperature is quite mild. When the winter winds come, we’ll barely see the sun, and just a moment outside can leave you frozen.” Triana glanced at Vlador with a deep sigh. He nodded slightly in response. “You’re right. We should make the most of our time,” Vlador said, rising from his seat. “Thank you for your hospitality.”

"The land belongs to the Winter family, but regular people live here under the family's protection. There are shops, schools, and even hospitals further outskirt the main building. You'll see them from time to time if you ever leave the mansion."

The first snow came early that year. Elmsworth was awash in gray skies and frost-kissed rooftops by the fourth week of November. The chill sank into everything—bones, breaths, and silences. Richard stirred the fireplace in the study, watching the orange glow fight the cold shadows creeping through the corners of the room. I swear the thunderstorm chased me. Autumn fast approached, and I could tell by the hint of coldness in the air or maybe it was because I was soaking wet. At least it wasn’t a blizzard. Which reminded me of Winter. I hadn’t even asked how he got his name or his brother’s. Lord knows Las Vegas probably never even saw snow. Whereas here in Minnesota, we had ice and snow practically ten months a year. A howl sounded a few feet from me, and I stilled. My heart pounded in my chest as another wolf answered, then another. He left the room. A fierce winter covered the forests with heavy snow-clusters and icicles, and filled ravines to their edges with drifts, so that the whole land seemed a single white plain. Great, sudden storms came, in which men and herds were lost under the pall of snow; roads grew misleading and perilous. A lonely Jaweldur howled in the distance.

At dinner, my mom hit me with, "Tristan, why didn't you bring Chloe along? "We're not getting any younger, and you guys live so far away. Who knows how many more times we'll get to see Chloe?" I felt a lump in my throat and just kept my head down, focusing on my food to keep the tears at bay. "Mom, Chloe is off traveling with Sheila. We'll bring her by to see you guys for New Year's." No sooner had I said that than my phone started buzzing. It was Sheila. I stepped outside to take the call.

In the darkness of night, where the moon shone as bright as it could, ran the White Wolf into the deep forest.
