I heard her soft footsteps behind me. She tugged lightly at the hem of my shirt as if to make sure I didn’t leave her behind. Such a scared little cat. In the room, I pointed for her to sit. Switching on the light, I pulled the first-aid box from the drawer and sat beside her.
“You don’t have to—” she started, but I silenced her with a look.
Taking a cotton swab dabbed with antiseptic, I cleaned the blood, then applied ointment. She hissed softly. I tried to be gentle, though my hands were firm. I could feel her gaze on me the entire time.
