Pov Layla Flashback “Mom! Mom! I found a book in the library with a big black wolf on the cover! Is it about us?” The little girl rushed into her mother’s lap, clutching a book no bigger than her two hands, and proudly placed it on the dining table of their large family room. “Can we read it?” she asked, her voice filled with bright hope. “Of course, my angel. Open the first page.” The little girl obeyed eagerly, discovering a title written in strange swirling letters across the center of the page.

Unfortunately, he was much faster, swirling away and holding the book higher up, his eyes still trained raptly on the words. “Ivan stop! You’re invading my privacy!” I protested but he didn’t seem to care. He held it out of my reach, flipping through the pages while he read every word and my heart beat rapidly knowing what lay ahead. I tried to snatch the book out of his hand once more, but he spun away from me and I gave up. He flipped to the last page where I’d made a very unflattering drawing of him, one with horns and long knife like fangs.

As I turned to respond, the lady returned with a large album in her hands. She smiled at me, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively at both of us. I glared at Michael, who looked completely relaxed and unbothered. I took the album. The first picture was of a very pretty baby in a pink dress, a crown, and a little wand. “Oh my gosh, this is so cute,” I gushed. “That’s Mikey.” My smile froze for a second before I burst into laughter. The next picture was of him in a torn yellow dress.

My little prince, once so untouchable, now carried the evidence of my claim hidden under his expensive suit. I switched feeds and watched him climb into a cab, then followed him through the city until he reached Vane Capital. He walked into my building like he belonged there. He kept his head high and his back straight, but I saw the slight hitch in his gait. The way he favored one side. Perfect.

Devika’s Pov The air here is super awkward and weird. It’s a miracle that we managed to get through breakfast in one piece. I’m sited with a book in my hands yet I can’t get myself to read it, as my mind keeps drifting to the guys. At one corner is Lucian, leaning casually on the wall and glancing at me from time to time. At the other end of the room is Damian and Aaron hushing lowly. I can’t help but feel sorry for Lucian though, it seems like they don’t want him anywhere close to them.

I wanted to be enraged but I didn't understand how to feel about a book laughing at me. After what seemed like forever, the book stopped and laid back on the table. "'What is the secret word?"' the book said, with traces of laughter in its voice. I didn't have time for the book's games. I had less than 30 hours to train and prepare myself for the challenge. The book wasn't helping matters. I said the next thing that came to my mind. "Alizon. The gem of Alizon." The book kept quiet then flipped its pages open. It stopped at one and words began to appear on them. Once that was done, a mist of glow came out from the book.

I begin to stand up and grab the smaller hamper when Lorie begins to speak. "Um.. Layla?" She says hesitantly. "Yes." I reply back gently. "Can we read a book tonight?" She asks with pleading eyes. "Sure!" I reply. "What did you have in mind?" I ask as I approach the side of her bed. Slowly Lorie pulls a book out from under her pillow and hands it to me as I sit down on the bed next to her. The book is a mild chapter book and the label reads "Hank the Cowdog".
