“I know it.” The admission hit me like a punch to the gut. I leaned forward, elbows on the desk, my pulse racing. “How?” Sable took a slow breath before she answered. Her fingers pressed into her thighs. “My mother told me once. I was young, maybe nine or ten. She pulled me aside after one of my father’s long meetings. She was careful, the way someone is when they’re planting information they hope a child will remember later if things go bad. She called him the man who keeps the old debts.”

As soon as I hear her say this, I lift my face, startled. "H-how did you find out?" I stammer, swallowing the lump that formed in my throat, feeling I've gotten into trouble. "My dear, I was young once too, and I also escaped from uncle Mich's house, although it wasn't to see your father, I must confess; besides, I'm your mother, did you think I wouldn't notice, Liza? Now I want you to be honest and tell me, who did you visit?" I think for a few moments, and since I've never hidden things from mom, I decide to be honest.

I couldn't help it; she was so beautiful. My mind traveled back to years ago, with a younger and less weathered Sofia. A time when our only worry was if it would rain on the weekend and ruin our childhood plans. Everything was so much easier back then. And then my mother fell ill with breast cancer. I was just a 10-year-old boy, and Bel was barely more than a baby. I didn't tell any of my friends. I didn't even understand what was happening very well, but everyone could sense my bad mood. I wasn't much of a talker, but that year was worse. I spoke as little as possible, and sometimes not at all.

For me, nothing compares to the garden because that’s where Granny and I always went when I was young. “Ember, come on,” said my mother. Only then did I realize that they had left me. I immediately walked quickly and approached mommy. I held her hand for a moment and pushed her wheelchair myself even though daddy was there.

The car zoomed past my pack and the memories I had with my mother flashed back across my mind. I remembered when I was a five years old child and my milk teeth had just fallen off. I remembered I had cried my eyes out in front of the pack house fearing it wouldn't grow back, and then, I had thought when I meet my mate in the future, he would think I was a ugly girl. My mother had stepped out, picking me up into her arms for a hug while I kept on cursing the stone I had tripped over.

Few memories could never be erased. My thatha told many incidents about my mama obsession. I never left his side till my age ten as I always wanted to be around him. And once I even walked to his school from my third standard - lunch break and sat in his classroom for the rest of the day. My parents almost went to give police complaints about me missing. And that day, my amma hit me with a broom until it couldn't be used anymore. That's my first and worst memory of getting hit by her.

They have to. For hours, I lay there, unmoving. I keep myself occupied by thinking of happier times. Memories of growing up comfort me and I play through some of the most precious moments of my life in my head. Father has always raised me well. And he's never made me yearn for Mama. Not that I can even remember her. She died from pneumonia when I was only 2 years old. And since then, it's always just been me and my father and the animals on the farm. He taught me everything I know. When I wanted to learn something, he would sit right down and make sure to teach it to me. We're happy on our own. He works so hard to make sure I never miss out on having a mother.
