"Show your teeth," I instructed, wanting to capture her genuine happiness. She complied, smiling wide as she nestled closer to me. CLICK. My smile faded as I stared at the photo. It was a rare sight—I was smiling, my fucking teeths visible. It was a moment of unguarded joy, something I rarely showed. "Now, you pinky promised me. Don't forget," she murmured, climbing out of my lap and laying down on the bed.

I’d never had anyone look at me like that: with disappointment that I existed. Well, except for old man Gallagher. But I didn’t give a shite what he thought about me. “Let’s try smiling without teeth,” I said to the couple I was taking photos of at a park in the city. The guy was one of those people who look constipated every time he smiled for a photo. Flipping through the ones I’d taken already, I knew it’d be a struggle to find a decent one. The guy smiled without teeth, but he widened his eyes so he looked like a serial killer. Fucking hell.

He gave each one the specific honesty of a man who had been carrying them privately for a long time and was setting them down for the first time in the room where they had always belonged.
