Diego took it as consent, crossing the room to draw open a curtain that revealed a one-way mirror. On the other side, strippers moved like living art—bodies twining around poles with practiced grace. “That’s Natasha,” Diego pointed out, nodding toward a dancer in a violet mask. Alexander rose from his seat, drink in hand, and stepped closer to the glass. His fingers traced the outline of the woman’s figure through the mirror. She swayed with hypnotic rhythm, every motion deliberate, as though she sensed unseen eyes on her.

A gasp escaped my lips as the light shone on Nana, seated on a chair in the middle of the large room, her mouth gagged and fear written all over her face. A man, dressed in black and in a black mask stood behind her with a gun to her head. "No!" I whispered as I looked on. "So this is the knight in shining armor?" A voice came from my right and I almost jumped out of surprise. There was another man dressed like the first man, sitting on a chair to my right. "Who are you and what do you want?" I asked angrily. "I just want what is mine." His voice was so calm as he spoke. It was eerily calm, like he had done it numerous times, and taken the lives of some unlucky few.

Like she was empty of tears. "The mask was a gift from my mom, someone I thought I lost long before I lost my dad, I survived with an injury on my face that the doctors said would scar me. Everyone hated me after that, for taking away their alpha, for being weak and ugly." Lennox's hand came around her and held her close as she exposed more of herself. "The mask was a way of hiding my face so I don't disgust people but more than that it was what helped me stay close to my parents even when the wound was gone, I couldn't be without the mask."

"Do you take this woman to be your wife, to stand by her through thick and thin?" "I do," the man said, his voice muffled by the mask. The guests whispered in awe. Howard Larson, the Larson family's big shot, was so in love with me that he would not let a bad cold stop our big day. He did not want to disappoint me. "Wait a second." The man's eyes darted around, and his forehead was dotted with sweat. I smiled and asked, "Howard, you're looking a bit pale. Too busy with the wedding to remember your medicine?"

“That’s kind of the point of tonight, isn’t it?” Before I could move, he spoke. “Why do you wear the mask?” My hand lifted on instinct to the said mask, brushing its edge. “What?” He leaned back slightly, eyes locked on me. He knew I’d heard him. I let out a laugh that sounded so fake the second it left my mouth. “I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of mystery?” I shrugged trying to sell it. “Isn’t that the appeal?” He didn’t answer. Just hummed. Quiet. Dangerous. Probably filing my answer somewhere I couldn’t reach.

No, it was too light and flimsy and besides, who gave a girl money on a date? “Well, are you going to open it?” I ripped the seal open and a lace mask fell onto my lap. I looked at him in shock and he smiled a young boyish grin. “It’s a masquerade party. The mask is mandatory.” I smiled. I had only seen parties like that on TV. “Do you have one?” I teased and he pulled out a black leather one and put it over his face. It left his nose and mouth exposed but his eyes seemed to stare into my soul from behind the mask. He looked like my masked hero.

Andrius fell silent after hearing Luna’s explanation. That was true. Luna had been with him in the Royal Gardens in Sumeria the entire time since they decided to erect a grave for Old Hagstorm. It would have been impossible for her to invite the three families by herself. In that case, the masked person was the suspicious one. With that thought, he asked, “Luna, were there any special characteristics about the masked person? Can you recognize him?” “He...” Luna casually made up some details. “He was dressed in a black robe, looked quite thin, and his eyes gave off a sinister feeling.”

Yet, it added an air of mystery and intrigue to the evening, leaving me both nervous and exhilarated at the same time. The same master I wanted to know so much, I was almost losing my mind out of curiosity. How? I paused as I stared at him up and down. No wonder he carried so much presence and the other men gave way for him when he was about to come dance with me. Damn it. How did I miss this? But why the fuck was he wearing a mask. Everything about him was mysterious, coupled with the fact that he was wearing hand gloves. Even his name was mysterious– what the fuck was Mysterio?

I hum in agreement. Before we can move further, a servant steps forward, holding out a velvet tray filled with masks. I nudge her. “Pick one.” Her brows shoot up. “Wait… this is a masquerade?” I nod. Sid huffs. “Well, that explains your mysterious masked-woman look.” She reaches forward and selects a black mask studded with tiny diamonds, turning it in the light with clear approval. Then she glances at me and frowns. “Where’s Alex?”
