My lips part as I walk back into the house. I place the box on the breakfast table before looking at the flower. They smell so nice. “Secret admirer?” Quinn asks, walking down the stairs towards me, and I shake my head because I have no idea who would send me this. First, I check the books. They are special editions with sprayed edges that I have been looking for for a year now. It’s a dragon series that I started a couple of years back. I can’t help but chuckle because even when I tried to order them, it took me a long time.

There was a bedroom, a sitting room, a study with an empty desk, and a smaller room off the side that still had a low shelf running round it at about the height of a child. Some of it was for a girl of six. Some of it wasn't — the desk, the reading chair, a shelf of things somebody had clearly bought for a woman. Then I saw the boxes. They were stacked along the wall of the sitting room, three deep in places, and every one had a label on it with a year and my name. I put my hand on the nearest and looked at Evander. "Go on," he said. The first box I opened was old enough that the tape had yellowed. Inside was a set of six children’s books, still held together by the original sleeve.

Although she had not opened the box, Thea knew the Book of Malice was within the box and would also have records of Demonic Breath and Murderous Energy. "They explode," she said dramatically. "Or they contain threatening letters or biological hazards or-“

But curiosity had always been her fatal flaw. The case opened with a soft click. Inside were books—beautiful, leather-bound, centuries old. Mira ran her fingers along their spines, marveling at the craftsmanship. At the end of the row, nestled between a Shakespeare folio and a medieval manuscript, was a box. Not a book box. A wooden box, carved with symbols she didn't recognize, its surface worn smooth by time. Mira lifted the lid. Inside was a photograph.

Though there were many poisons recorded in the book, there was nothing noteworthy about their features and traits that I could use to compare them to the poison of the snake. After a while, I reached my limit and started to give up. I filed the books back to where I’d found them, and just as I was about to leave, I noticed a large wooden box in the corner. I approached it curiously. It was made of black wood and had some intricate carvings I couldn’t make out across the top. Most importantly, it was locked with an enormous gold lock. When the librarian walked by, I pulled her aside. “Are there any books in this box?” I wondered.

•flashbacks• Eamon hurriedly tuck the boxes in the power bike. He wasn’t supposed to do the delivery but since his colleague wasn’t here yet. He had to go in his stead. Help him do the delivery.
