Is that how much he loves reading? Hesitantly, I walked to the reading table and picked up one of the books. Surprisingly, the books were all about healing or trying to find a way to heal something. I couldn’t pinpoint what it was about. My curiosity made my eyes lead me straight to a big black box. It wasn’t locked, but it had a key on it. I tried to fight it, but I found myself wanting to know what was in the box, and the small dark room at the other end.

The doors creaked as she pushed them open, revealing what lay inside. The cabinet was filled with papers, old books, and trinkets, the remnants of a past long forgotten. Bliss ran her fingers over the contents, her heart racing with each new discovery. Among the books, she found a leather-bound journal, its pages yellowed with age. The title, written in faded gold lettering, read Blackwood Family History. She pulled it out and opened it, her hands trembling with anticipation.

On hurried steps, I rushed to the front door before ripping it open, to find my security guard with a mailbox standing on my front porch. I thanked him before taking the box and disappearing into the house. My limbs felt like jelly, my mouth dried from the anticipation of what awaited me. I arrived in my living room and dumped the box onto the coffee table before ripping it open. There were eight books, thicker than what I had imagined, yet smaller than the one she went to the interview carrying.

As I sighed. "What is this? You know I don't do all these..." I said and he smiled. "Yes, but Lia said she will help you put this on. And besides, that's not the real gift. There is another box, look for it." He said and I rolled my eyes. I found the other box and opened it and gasped. It was a rare first-edition medicine book. It is so precious. How did he even find it? "oh god... this... this is incredible. How did you even find it?" I asked and he smiled but didn't say anything. He won't tell me I guess...

My fingers skimmed the spines absentmindedly until one shelf stopped me cold. It wasn’t a book. It was a box. Old. Wooden. Slightly worn at the edges, as if it had been handled often once… then never again. I don’t know why I opened it. Maybe curiosity. Maybe instinct. Maybe the quiet part of me that had started asking questions I was afraid to answer. Inside were documents. Neatly stacked. Chronological. Business-related—until the bottom. A thin, hardbound book sat there, its cover faded with time.

I open to find that he is a uninformed man, with a package by his side. I sign the slip, thank the delivery guy, and drag the brown box inside. I find a cutter and I'm about to cut into it. What if it's a bomb? I push it back a bit. But bombs don't come in bigs packages. I go close to the box again and then I cut the top open. Beneath is a shiny black surface. My brows come together in curiosity. What's this? I open the box wider until, a sleek, black, and way too elegant to be normal travel box emerges.

She tore the box open. Inside this box were a dozen books. Most looked the same—typical bindings, mostly classics. But one book stood out immediately. It didn’t look anything like the others. It was thick, overstuffed and weathered, with leather binding. It looked as if it had been through a war. And it looked ancient.

Why in the world did he have all of these for? My fingers danced along the spines of the book in curiosity. I pulled out each book slightly, hoping like my library one of them would reveal some secret compartment. I stopped as one book caught my attention. It didn’t feel solid like the other books. It was too light. “Penn, I think I’ve got something.” I pulled it out. It was a black book with no title. I opened it to discover it was a hollow book. A velvet box, slightly smaller than the book, was hidden inside of it. I opened the box and smiled.

It was a black box with a golden lock. I’ve never seen this before. I didn’t even know she had it. Curious to know, I break the lock and check the contents. Then, frowning, I scan the box. “Letters?” I mumble. There were a lot of letters. They seem old enough to know that this has been coming and going for years ago. Opening one of them, I read it. This was in codes, but why? Too curious about my good, I stand up and bring the box over to a table. Taking a set. I take everything out and check each letter. There were at least eighty letters. All with the name E.
