The first being a book. In the book has pages with numbers, 1-18. 1 look at them, realizing its photos of me and him or me, him and Grace. They are placed in chronological order, matching with the number on the page. Tears spring to my eyes at the memories. There’s another, smaller box with a bunch of candy in it, all my favorites. There are also some candles, and another box full of little miscellaneous stuff. It takes me a while to realize what it is.

I took the book with his photo on it, When I opened the first, there was a note and a tiny box carved in it. My heartbeat spiked. These are not books. Not just any books. I open the other books and they are all the same. It has tiny boxes carved in them and story stared in the pages beneath.

The delivery person left. Elara watched it like a spectator. The house received things. The house processed them. The house remained unchanged. Later, she found the delivery placed on a side table near the entry. A box. Heavy paper. Subtle branding. Inside, a set of design books, high-end, rare editions, the kind she would never buy for herself unless she had a reason she could justify. There was no note. Elara stood there for a long moment, fingers resting on the edge of the box.

On the body of the case was a little note: FIGURED YOU’D LIKE THESE -X. My curiosity heightened as I tore open the case, and I gasped once I saw what was inside. Books- novels to be precise, all stacked neatly in the case. As I glanced through their titles, I noticed they were thrillers and horror genres, a bit of romance too. My toes curled in excitement and a grin spread across my face as I looked through all of them. I rolled my eyes. Of course, he’d figured I’d like them; he always figured everything about me.

“Did we leave that open last time?” “No,” he said immediately. “I remember closing it.” We exchanged a heavy, loaded look. Then we walked toward the closet like two idiots in a horror movie who haven’t seen horror movies. I pushed the door open slowly. Inside were clothes, shoes, and— A metal box. Rectangular. Matte black. Tucked behind a stack of textbooks like it was deliberately hidden but not hidden enough. Brandon raised an eyebrow. “That’s not suspicious at all.” I knelt and pulled it out carefully.

A small, intricately carved wooden box lay hidden among the books, its delicate patterns and symbols etched into the surface like a secret language. River's heart quickened as she carefully extracted the box from its hiding place. The box itself was beautiful, adorned with motifs of the moon and wolves. River's fingers trembled as she lifted the lid, revealing a soft, velvet interior. Inside, a folded paper, a small key, and a miniature, golden locket lay nestled. The paper unfolded to reveal a cryptic message scrawled in Catherine's handwriting:

“About heroes and monsters. I never realized they were the same people.” Damien’s voice was quiet. “He was trying to prepare you.” “Or warn me.” We reached the library or what was left of it. Shelves lay toppled, glass shattered. Someone had searched this place before. But not well enough. Because behind the fireplace, hidden by a cracked marble panel, I found it. A metal box. Locked, dusty, unassuming. I broke it open with a crowbar Damien handed me. Inside were stacks of documents, a gold watch, and a small black leather journal.

It felt private, almost sacred in its order. I slowly walked to the shelves and scanned the titles. Some were in languages I didn’t understand. Others were so old the pages were yellowed and brittle. I reached for one that had a worn-out spine, just to read the title, when a small object behind the book fell and landed on the floor with a light thud. I bent down and picked it up. It was a sealed envelope, faded with age but still intact. There was no name on it,just the crest of the Mystic Pack pressed into the wax seal.

I examined the box closely before I placed it on the marble table in the kitchen. Damien said I should call him if I needed anything or in this case if anything out of the ordinary happened. But the package was sent to me so I was a bit confused about what to do. Fearfully, I began to open the box, silently praying that it would not blow up in my face. I recalled what Damien had told me about Renaissance secretly murdering its former employee. Was this one of the cases? I removed the brown paper that was used to wrap the box and I saw that it was a completely black force. I trailed my hand over the top lid for a moment, before I opened it.

I held my breath again while Ken scrutinized the box as aunt Courtney sat down. “Mom, What’s this?” He asked her. I looked up at her wanting to know the answer to that question as well. She tapped on the box lightly with a faint smile. The look on her face was hope mixed with worry as she stared at the box seeking answers of her own. “This used to be Mabel’s.” She said. Her fingers ran down the latch and she clicked it open. “She does not know it is missing. It was from a ‘good witches’’ book. It had no dark magic, so I’ve been told.”
