Nate lifted a trembling hand to his face. His fingers—no, his claws—met not skin, but a raised, rigid pattern.
In the reflection of the car window, he saw the nightmare. Thick, tar-black streaks, like corrupted veins or the branches of a dead tree, ran from his hairline down over his temple and cheek, completely covering the left side of his face. His left eye was no longer his own. The sclera was stained a solid, glossy black, and in the center, where his pupil should be, glowed a single, hellish point of burning red.
