I couldn't reach Gabriel for three days after we were rushed off of his land. Vampires or not, it was still a huge blow to confidence that the only man I ever had sex with was nowhere to be found afterward. Elena kept telling me to be patient. I knew it was killing her just as much to be away from Athena, but they were at least texting. I received nothing. No texts, no calls, and no voice in my head. He was just gone.

Avery stared at her dim phone screen, her eyes beginning to sting. Since last night, every call she made had ended with the same cold, flat operator’s voice. Ashton, the man who had never made her wait more than an hour just for a brief update, had now vanished without a trace beyond the Middle Eastern horizon.

“What makes you think I’d ever go back with you? “Sean, do I need to remind you? We’ve been divorced for a long time. We have nothing to do with each other anymore.” Sean clutched at his ears like he couldn’t bear to hear it, breathing heavily. He stepped forward, reaching for my hand. “Jane, after you left, I realized I can’t live without you! Without your presence at home, I can’t even sleep. If you don’t come back to me, then life has no meaning!”

Inside the banquet hall, the groom was nowhere to be seen. An inexplicable sense of panic rose in Rowena's heart. She murmured, "Nathan is still not ready? It's almost time. I was not back in a week. The silence didn’t last long. By the next week, everything started unraveling fast. Maeve stopped coming around completely. No more texts. No more coffee. No more pretending. It was like she disappeared overnight. Sophia stood in the kitchen one morning staring at her phone. She was in this hospital the whole time! What do you mean she passed away two hours ago?” The nurse was startled by the sudden outburst, and her polite demeanor instantly vanished. Under her breath, she called Susan a crazy woman before she turned around and ignored Susan entirely. Susan refused to believe it.
