Clouds drifted lazily across the sky, occasionally veiling the moon's radiance until it was completely out, shining bright from the sky where it was. Nova watched as it unfolded. It was the least she could do from the cage she was in under the moon. She had seen a full moon before, but something in her told her that this one was different. Drifting from her thoughts, she recalled that it was supposed to be her birthday. It was the day she would turn Eighteen. An adult. But here she was in a cage. She had no friends to celebrate it with,but on other days,she mixed drinks and took them in the dark of her room till she was high on them.

“Yeah. Took a coma, but he’s catching on.” The room filled with laughter—broken, shaky, real. Outside, the howls continued—joyful, fierce, unbroken. For the first time in weeks, Silverveil slept without fear. And above them, the moon rose full and red. Bloodmoon. Watching. Waiting. Whispering in the wind: This is not the end.

The old paper dragged across the book with a sound like dry skin peeling away from a hidden wound. A second drawing appeared. This one showed two wolves facing each other beneath a black moon, one with a crown of silver branches, one with a crown of shadow. Between them stood the baby, Maelor, with one tiny hand raised toward each crown. My stomach turned cold.

Meanwhile, the twins still stood there calm as ever. Then suddenly... Boom. In less than two minutes, both of them shifted. And I swear to the Moon Goddess, I had never seen anything so beautiful in my entire life. Nova’s wolf was a shimmering silver, almost like her fur was woven from starlight and glitter. Every strand glowed beneath the blue moon. Sloane’s wolf was a creamy pearl color, soft and luminous like polished opal. And over each of their eyes rested a star-shaped marking. Nova’s was cream.
