The clock on the nightstand reads 11:58. Two minutes until midnight. The rose is on the floor. The ribbon is loose. Someone is watching. Someone is always watching. But now, we are watching back.

I walk over to the small bag near the corner of the room, kneeling down and unzipping it slowly inside more tools more things I’ll need because this isn’t just watching anymore this is moving forward. I pull out a small notebook flipping it open to the page I’ve been working on. Names. Times. Patterns. When they leave the house when the guards switch when the lights go off when things are quiet there’s a rhythm to their life now and I’ve learned it better than they realize. “They think they’re safe,” I say softly. My pen taps lightly against the page. “They think it’s over.” I smile slightly. “It’s not over,” I whisper not even close I close the notebook slowly setting it down with everythin

Couldn't deny my nature. That night, weird things started happening at my apartment. My books moved from where I left them. The temperature dropped fast. Shadows shifted in the corners of my eyes. Something was watching me. Hunting me. I checked every lock twice. Closed all the curtains. But I still felt eyes on me. My wolf was alert. Hair standing up. Ready to fight or run. Chapter Ten I lift my glass up and move it half an inch, pressing it down on the table so it leaves a water ring on the surface. I repeat the process, making a pattern with the condensation. “I never knew a glass of water could be so entertaining.” Eliza slides a cocktail in front of me and leans back, crossing her arms. Lucas is in the office at the bar tonight, and I’ve been sitting at a table in the back for the last half-hour reading. I just finished my book and am still reeling from the cliffhanger ending. The next book doesn’t come out for three months, dammit.

she whispered. “I promise.” She closed her eyes and finally fell asleep. I didn’t. I stayed up all night, watching the sky. And just before dawn, I saw something move in the woods below us. “We’re here, ma'am!” “Thank you,” I said, stepping out of the car. But the moment I faced Hemsworth Villa, my wolf stirred, my hackles rising. The villa loomed against the night sky like a massive beast crouched in silence, watching me and waiting. I inhaled again, trying to settle the unease. You’re stressed, Aria. Too many fights, not enough sleep. That’s all. But as I walked through the living room, the sensation grew stronger. Someone was watching. And then I saw him. Nathan.

He looked at me for a moment. "So am I," he said. And then, because he was Ethan Nightfang and he understood that some moments were complete as they were and did not require anything added to them, he picked up his book and read. And I turned back to the window and watched the snow fall on the northern forest, and my wolf was warm and entirely at rest inside me, and the locket was against my ribs, and the world outside was quiet and cold and exactly what it was. Home, my wolf said. Still not a question. Home.
