“Looks like it’s a quiet night after all.” Brandon rubbed his tired eyes. “Better safe than sorry. At least the family’s still safe and happy.” As the first light of dawn broke over La Villa Avenue, the officers prepared to wrap up their overnight watch. Though nothing had happened, they knew the calm could be deceptive. They exchanged updates with the backup team, ensuring everyone remained alert for whatever might come next. The Norris family, unaware of the silent guardians outside, continued their peaceful morning routine and the officers stayed watchful, knowing their work was not yet done.

“We stay inside today. No risks.” The girl played on the floor with Chloe. They laughed together. Marcus watched with a smile. Sophia and Elena talked in the corner. Damien stood by the door. The day passed slow. We talked about the future. A new town. A new home. The girl asked about her mother. Sarah told her happy stories. I listened and felt hope. Unfortunately they had no idea what was going on and a well-meaning rescue operation turned into a global catastrophe. The proles first killed their rescuers and then escaped from the research facility to bring a plague of unprecedented proportions to the world. I sat back in my chair by the window, prepared to spend the rest of the afternoon reading when a shiver ran down my spine. I jumped out of my seat and spun around to see a pair of yellow eyes glowing in the corner of the room. As those eyes drew closer to me, I realized that it was Simon, the fae that came to warn me the other day.
