I sat in the back, away from him, unsure of what I was trying to protect — my sanity or my hope. Kade didn’t look at me. But his foot tapped. Just once. Then stilled. The bell rang. People flooded out. I moved slowly, dragging my steps. When I reached the front door, I froze. Another note. Taped right across the center. Slanted and aggressive. “You don’t belong here. Maybe you never did.” No signature. No handwriting match. Still not Kade’s. But it wasn’t Carter’s either — not his style. He liked public humiliation, loud whispers, sideways glares. He didn’t bother hiding.

She looks me up and down before smirking at me and turning away. I feel a bit awkward here. I don’t know these people and I don’t have friends, besides Nadia. She is the closest thing to a friend I have and I know I am treading on water with that decision. I am not mad at her for ignoring me though. I am not a party person and she has more than just me as a friend. I watch as she is engrossed in a conversation with a few other girls before I get bored.

“You’re unbelievable.” He tilted his head, waiting for me to explain, so I did—sort of. “Look, El, you can’t have other friends besides me. You get that, right?” His brows shot up. “What?” But I don’t have anyone else. Even if I did, it’s not a big deal,” he replied, but I kept my tone serious. “I’m serious,” I said, leaning back against the headboard. “You don’t need anyone else. Neither do I. Let’s just keep it that way—no third parties.”

In that thought I looked at Anto who was looking at me but he immediately looked away. We had breakfast as a family but again Anton was distant. I can't quite understand what happened between us, we used to be so close. While we were driving at school I asked ‘’so what is the best think about having a wolf? The strength? The speed? The freedom?’’. They both smiled deviously saying ‘’ the mind linking’’. Now they could speak to each other even in a crowded place without anyone hearing them. I was happy seeing them so close and happy. While Anton was distant with me he was still close with my brother. Was I jealous? A little bit.

He really needs that drink. Adom steps into the throng of people bustling about, trying to squeeze himself into cracks he finds between bodies so he doesn’t have to really touch anyone. The only good thing so far happens to be the small air diffusers all around the small bar that are doing a great job of keeping everyone’s scents at bay. Adom has an especially sensitive nose so he appreciates it.

He exhales heavily, blowing out some of his own tension but keeping me close. It’s probably the most honest moment of intimacy we have ever had. No games, no motives, just nose to nose, so close it’s like we are one and there’s stillness and peace between us. If my stupid head doesn’t kick in to make me jump ship and head for the hills, then I could get used to this.

Those who were close to me knew that I have loved Aiden for so long and I was more than ready to shout it out to the world but perhaps he was just shy and didn't want people to know about it. I would have suspected his intentions but I had never seen him close to another girl. Ella was the only one whom I had seen him with and I knew they were just friends. So if there was another girl in school he was interested in, he wouldn't have been giving me the attention he was giving me. This made me conclude that he was feeling shy and that is why he did not want me to tell anyone. So I said, “Alright, let our relationship be a secret for now but eventually those around us will get to find out.”

The smile on her face went stiff when she saw me. Her voice was shrill. “How did you get in? “Where are your manners? How can you enter a home without the owner’s permission?” My voice was icy. “This is my home. Why can’t I come in?” Cass scoffed. “Your home? You’re just my husband’s brother. Don’t try to act like you own the place. Take a look at the mirror and ask if you belong here. “Stop overstepping. It’s pathetic, really.”

I was ready—for today, for her, and maybe even for a small taste of freedom. Call me insane, but I don’t know anymore. He’s controlling—silent, intense, almost inhuman in how he avoids people. He rarely speaks to anyone, and when he does, it's brief and calculated. The ones around us? They don’t talk either. They just watch—always behind me, always alert, like they’re waiting to pounce if anyone even thinks about getting close. He’s always near. Always.

Scott's expression changed, and he said impatiently, "I'm doing all this for you! If it weren't for me, would you have ever gotten first place?" Tessa's eyes were red as she shouted back, "But did I ever ask you to sacrifice yourself?" Scott fell silent, then let out a long sigh. "Can you stop? There's only one week left. This whole farce is almost over." As for me, I didn't feel hurt at all. After all, Scott and I were just using each other.
