The Mate Games
For the first time in days, I feel like I’m not fighting the forest, but listening to it.
I close my eyes, breathing slow. The fever still simmers under my skin, but it’s weaker now, fading.
Then I hear the rustle of wings.
I look up.
A raven perches on a low branch above me, black feathers gleaming like night. It tilts its head, watching me with bright, intelligent eyes.
It caws once, then drops something.
A feather.
It lands at my feet, soft and perfect.
I reach down, picking it up gently.
