Rebecca felt overwhelmed with love and gratitude as she realized how lucky she was to have such wonderful companions in her life. She hugged Buddy tightly to her body, feeling grateful for her unwavering loyalty and affection.

I suddenly felt his gaze on me and as my eyes locked on his rich brown orbs, I forgot how to breathe. I had to fight the sudden urge to fan my face as his gaze bored into mine unwaveringly. I shifted uneasily in the seat and he must have noticed it because he soon smiled and then looked away. Was it the kiss we shared that was making me react to him this way? Made me so aware of him, physically? He was my fucking best friend! So what if he was as sexy as hell? I couldn't let a pesky feeling ruin our friendship. Plus, I still hadn't broken the mate bond with Trevor.

"Max Cairncross, I will ask you one last time. Are you lending me the money or not?" I said each word clearly. "No. I am not." Dylan completely broke down. He yanked a necklace out from under his collar. It held a transparent bottle pendant, smaller than his pinky. Inside the bottle was a rolled-up strip of paper that said: "Max Cairncross is my only best friend." I had one around my neck too. Mine said: "Dylan Price is my only best friend." We gave each other those bottles after graduating high school. They symbolized lifelong friendship.

Lena had been my roommate all four years of college. She slept at the top bunk while I occupied the bottom. She would lean over the edge every night to talk to me until two or three in the morning. We talked about dreams, gossip, boys we liked, the lives we imagined for ourselves. On the night we graduated, we finished an entire bottle of red wine and lay on the rooftop, watching the stars. That was the night she brought up Fatcat Cook. “Zoe, let’s come up with a code.” “If one of us disappears or goes silent, hearing this name means something’s gone wrong.”

We finally came back carrying the newest game console, as happy as larks. That was why, on this day, we were completely cool about the whole situation. I didn't want to hear any more of it, and I couldn't believe Leon would sit and watch me get humiliated like that. Or maybe, I did believe it, I just hadn't come to terms with it. That the one person I had trusted and relied on would be the same person who would break my trust. I cleaned my eyes and walked to the basketball court. It would be empty now, and it was the perfect place to clear my mind, and then maybe write a few chapters of my novel. It was when I searched my back, that I realised my novel had fallen out. There was no sight of him and my eyes went to a certain blue eyed boy.
