I’d tried to list everything that I needed to say, everything that I had to explain.
I slammed the notebook shut. I huffed out a breath, and turned to look back out of the window. The forest was thicker here, the trees more densely packed. There were more pine trees, too, darker and taller than the bright orange trees of the sparse woodland we’d driven through before.
Silently, Samyak’s hand snaked its way into mine. I gave it a small squeeze, but kept my eyes fixed resolutely on the pines outside. They were untouched by the oncoming autumn, and would remain as they were even in the harsh winter ahead.
