Beta Bernard's eyes bulged out, as though they were about to pop. Before he could react, I stretched my hand outward, my fingers curling around his neck and seizing his breath. When I had woken up, frantic, I soon realized the reason Minsi was calm was because we were resistant to silver. As a silver wolf, that was one of our abilities. Beta Bernard didn't know this, and he underestimated me. Minsi told me Ophelia could have broken free from the cursed silver shackles if she wanted, but she didn’t because she longed to feel the pain.

One raised its head to the dawn and howled, the sound tearing through Kaelen’s bones. Werewolves. The pack fanned out, circling. There were at least six, maybe more in the shadows. Kaelen gripped the useless remains of his poker before realizing it had melted to slag. He had no weapon. Only the fire inside him, and that was as likely to kill Elira as their hunters. The largest of the wolves padded forward, towering over the others. Its silver eyes locked on Kaelen. “The blood stirs,” it growled, its voice a gravelly rumble that no beast should possess. “He belongs to the Moon.”

Witch-taint. ​“Kai,” a soft voice calls out. ​Liora steps out from the shadows of the room. She looks exhausted, but her hazel eyes are fierce. The Silver Dagger is unsheathed in her hand, its ruby pulsing rapidly. ​“Miss Ophelia says the magic is too deep for herbs,” Liora says, stepping up to the cot. She looks at me, asking for permission. “The Blessing in my blood... it repels silver. The dagger channels it. Let me try.”

I hissed back, watching the man’s pitch-black eyes narrow angrily at me. “Is that a threat? Michael Gotham?” Wolverine Silver whispered so quietly that I almost wasn't sure he had spoken. Icy shards of glass slithered down my back to freeze over at the base of my spine. Of all the wolves at the table, it was Wolverine Silver I was most worried about. He had gotten his name because he was somehow immune to silver. Wolverine was a shredded beast on the battle field who could withstand silver attacks even better than us Alphas. We needed him on our side.
