By two o'clock in the afternoon, the sky had darkened again, a heavy fog rolling off the river and clinging to the high glass windows of the Law & Economics Archive.
The archive was located in the deep basement of the Foundation Library, two levels below the main reading rooms. It was a cold, quiet labyrinth of tall iron stacks containing ninety years of handwritten ledgers, institutional charters, and expired trust deeds. Almost nobody came down here; the air smelled of dry paper, iron rust, and old leather.
