Matthew said with a smile. Olivia knew that her new stepfather was just trying to lighten the mood and so she tried to wear a pleasant smile on her face as she replied, "I like it. The turkey is perfect, the meal is really nice," she replied. Hoping that she did sound brighter than she felt.

Something hungrier. I took one step toward the bed.

Just instinct. He stepped back once. Just enough to gain momentum. And he jumped.

A ping on my phone distracts me and I scramble to check what it was. It was a message from Williams and it makes my breath hitch. “Do not screw this up Stephanie. Your son is only a bullet away” The message read and my hand shook. I really can’t screw this up

“Promise me you would give it all a chance, you know I'm not only talking about study, you have always been good at that, I'm talking about enjoying the whole experience and of course, making friends.” I sighed noisily. “I promise you, now it's time to say goodbye for now, I have got classes to attend.” “Are you sure you don't want me to walk you in, it's your first day in a town you are still new in, it is normal to be super nervous.” I raised my eyebrows in utter astonishment. “Wait, what? Walk me in? Being a new student come with ‘perks' on its own, walking with your mother, on your first day in school, and as a senior, is a sure way to....“

"Come on, don't be like this. I just made a little joke." Carter shrugged, "Open it." I sighed and complied. Inside the envelope was another note. It said "Wrong answer, get yo' pretty ass to the other envelope, Ryder!" I laughed out loud, looking down at Carter who was smiling up at me. "Sneaky." I said and he winked, giving me the other letter. I open it. Inside was a note and a smaller envelope. "If you're sure this is your final answer, open the envelope and do what it says. If not, get the NO envelope and repeat the process until your definitive answer is YES." Said the note.
