“I know you aren’t a fan of asking for favors but I think the time has come to call in Hawk. He is the only one I know that has the means to protect her.” I weighed his words carefully. Hawk owed me a few favors, and we had worked together in the past, but I have never asked him to be a part of our network. Hawk had a good heart, but there were special circumstances which is why he was not involved with Clipped Wings. Whiz was right though; Hawk did have the means to protect Ophelia. As I thought it over the idea became more appealing to me because since Hawk was not involved in the organization then hardly anyone besides Whiz and myself would know where she was.

Orion wept. Before Silas could answer, a fluttering titter of taps sounded on the window. Orion lifted his head from his wet hands and locked his gaze on the source. A small swallow was pecking at the glass in an urgent manner. He rose swiftly and opened the window for the small animal. The bird's feathers were unlike any he had seen before. They were midnight and white, arranged like a tuxedo beneath the night sky. Its beak shone navy blue, and its tail was elongated at the tips. The bird was larger than that of a common swallow, yet it was no bigger than Orion's hand.

One blink—he was gone. The next, he was in the center of the field, hands raised. "Arise." The glyphs appeared beneath him, luminous golden circles inscribed with ancient runes. Light poured from them. Wings burst from his back—not feathery and delicate, but vast, blazing structures of divine power, each beat sending shockwaves through the field. Lucian nearly fell to his knees. Dorian stared. "Those... those are his wings." Lucian couldn't speak. He had seen them.

Jillian's lips twisted into a smug smile, but her expression was all fake misery by the time she settled in beside Mom and Dad. "Wanda probably doesn't want to be anywhere I am. I shouldn't be taking up her space. Maybe I should go." Then, whether on purpose or not, she tilted just enough for the diamond necklace around her throat to glint under the light, its blinding sparkle proving it wasn't some cheap trinket. It was Mom's favorite piece of jewelry. When I was little, before I went missing, she used to tell me, "Wanda, this is our family heirloom. One day, when you're older, it'll be yours."

I didn't reach for the blue light. I reached for the wings. I leaned into the biological horror. I stopped fighting the transition and I opened the door I hadn't even known existed. The gold scales on my arm exploded, spreading across my chest and neck in a suit of shimmering, solar mail. A pair of massive, translucent wings erupted from my back. They weren't made of feathers. They were made of solidified moonlight and liquid gold, spanning ten feet in either direction. The shockwave of the shift threw Liora and her wolf back toward the edge of the gorge.

Mane had just employed one of those many moves: Exploding Wings. Mane’s mumble was the trigger for the huge fiery wings that grew on his back. The wings were several dozens of meters long and several meters wide. When they appeared on Mane’s back they rose high into the sky, and flapped rapidly. Yet their beating didn’t lift Mane up or take him into the sky. With the beating of those wings, the cry of a Phoenix filled the ears of all who were here, and several large flames descended upon the retreating goblins, burning them all to a crisp. The fire was stronger, completely eliminating the goblins in less than a second.

"You can fly?!" I shivered from the cold sweat that broke out during my exchange with Alpha Knox and the air moving from Nyx's wings. "You have wings?!" I smiled trying to touch them. I couldn't even see them. Although they looked much more like large dragon fly wings, I had imagined angel-like wings. "Please do not touch, Princess." He sounded annoyed as he put his hand out pointing towards the castle. "They can be ripped and it's a headache to repair."

Close enough now that the sheer force of its wings hit the field and kicked up dirt, cloth, spent cartridges, broken splinters of wood, loose hair, blood-mud, and the sort of chaos that only battle creates and then leaves for the survivors to try calling landscape. I could see it better now. The gold of it. Not paint. Not reflected dawn alone. Built into the scale and hide and bone itself. The wings wider than any Aetherfang I had seen. The body larger too, somehow both more elegant and more terrifying than the enemy creatures. It did not move like a beast. It moved like something born understanding war. Then I saw him. Ronan. On its back. Of course.

Ilyana timidly touched the brunette's palms, and he, deftly picking her up, led her along. Once outside, William stopped. Black wings opened with a quiet rustle. The young man threw back his head and spread his arms to the sides. He made a powerful flap of his wings. A gust of wind blew through Ilyana's hair and clothes. A jerk - and the young man easily took off from the ground, soaring into the dark sky strewn with stars. His wings shone, shimmering in all shades of blue and purple.
