I told the smell, because I was tired of everything leaving. The city had shrugged into a gray sweater by the time I arrived at O’Rourke & Finch. The bell above the door chimed once, polite. Dust motes hung, catching weak light like confetti that had forgotten the party ended. The store always greeted me like an animal deciding—today— that I wasn’t a threat. “Morning, Silver.” Mr. O’Rourke’s voice floated from behind a stack of first editions. He was stacking receipts with the careful attention of a man who preferred order to blood pressure meds.

Son Paradise, was a unique hybrid of a two-story comic book store and coffee shop, owned by my family. We followed Amber into the shop, and I was immediately hit with that distinctive smell of new merchandise and plastic packaging. The place was impressive, well-organized sections for different genres, a wall of collectible figures, racks of manga in both English and Japanese, even a small café area in the back. Amber made a beeline for the shonen manga section, and Cynthia drifted after him. I was examining a display of vintage posters when I heard a familiar voice. "No way. DIANE Shopping was nice. I bought my pencils, socks and gloves. I even got myself Chinese takeout for dinner and a couple new comics from the bookstore near the condo. The bookstore, Supernova Comics, is a lovely sight to behold. The interior is beautiful, serene, filled with tall shelves containing so many cool comics, and there's even a cozy mini reading spot at the far end of the store. Mrs Jones, the bookstore owner, was nice and very hospitable to me. My shopping experience there was amazing, and I even see myself probably visiting there whenever I need to treat myself to a comic getaway.

The middle of the store toward the front is stacked full of tall white box structures holding hundreds, maybe thousands, of various comics separated out by maker and then series. Most of these areas are easy to overlook, but the back of the room draws my attention. Along the back wall, a few feet from a door marked employees only, three thick orange-ish colored couches form a half circle with a thick coffee table placed in the middle. Tucked away from the two customers pawing through the stacks of comics wait Aspen, Amanda, and Simone as I suspected.
