It all looked very interesting. I turned a few more pages. "How far are you with translating?" I asked him, while still running my fingers on the words that continued to give me a funny feeling. I turned to the next page and my breath hitched. "I'm on the 74th page." He answered and I looked down at the page number I was on. Page 501. He still had a long way to go. My face flushed and I couldn't get my eyes off the beast I was staring at. The book had no images with colour, but I could already imagine the creature with bright glowing green eyes. Oh no.

I moved toward the nearest compartment. The panel opened immediately when I touched it. Inside rested a stack of thin folders. Real paper. Not digital storage. Paper. The sight felt strangely shocking. Everything inside Sublevel Zero revolved around technology. This did not. I removed the first folder carefully. The cover contained no name. Only a designation. SUBJECT 04. My pulse quickened. I opened it. Most pages had deteriorated. Others were partially erased. Yet enough remained to read. Psychological evaluations. Behavioral observations.

Why rip out only one page? I read the numbers in the corners of the pages on either side, noting that they took page sixty-three. So I turn to the contents page at the start of the book. I skim down the list, until I find it. Song of The Sea Maiden ……………………… p63 The sea maiden. The beach. The dreams. The answers are right in front of me. I just can’t see them yet.
