Chapter 1 Every day was the same for Ariz Jones. School, part time work and twice a week she meets up with the irregulars of Nobel Paranormal Investigation. Sometimes when he's not busy, Ranka Taniyama the NPI Japanese resident monk or Ran for short teaches Ariz something about exorcisms and some warding spells.

She watched the pain bloom in his face, the sound of his scream echoing through the dark. “Try again,” she said, voice flat. Sweat poured from his brow. “Private consortium,” he gasped. “They track… anomalies. People like you.” Nyxara went utterly still. Anomalies. Not threats, not enemies. Anomalies—something new. She knocked him out before he could spit out another word, then surveyed the aftermath. Three bodies, no alarm. Not a whisper of intrusion on her security feeds. It led me to a door in the middle of the abyss. The door stood solid in front of me as the whisp passed through it and disappeared.
