“I said I don’t remember him.” Thorne stepped in before the tension could escalate further. “We’re not questioning your memory, Alpha. We’re questioning the fact that someone managed to bypass every layer of protection we’ve built without triggering a single alert.” Arthur tapped the map again. “Because they didn’t go through the borders.” I looked down at the marked territory lines. “Then where?” Arthur hesitated for half a second before answering. “There are only two known access points that bypass standard patrol rotation. One is the river crossing beneath the old stone ridge. The other—” He stopped.

The bridge shifted. No longer just a glowing seam in the sky. No longer a fragile connection barely holding two worlds together. The light condensed. Solidified. And then— A pathway appeared. A literal road of silver light stretching from the amphitheater across the sky toward the distant horizon of the human realm. The bridge was no longer an opening. It was a crossing. Stable. Steady. Alive. Gasps rose from the soldiers around the amphitheater as they stared at the glowing structure spanning the heavens.

Spring came late but all at once. The snow sagging, then dropping, then running down the loop in brown rivers that took branches and old trash and last year’s fear with it. The crossroads showed up first. Muddy and scarred. Then the meeting rock. Then the paths between towns. And by the second week people were walking again without skis. Carrying things instead of just surviving.

“That’s eight figures, Cross. Real money. Even for us.” Julian’s smile is slow and cruel. “They’re calling it the Black Run. A full sweep. Clean through Twelve. Sponsors are salivating. She’s hot, she’s new, she’s got trauma written all over her. They think she’s the first wildcard to actually make it.”

I lift her to hold her while Damen and Sam sit back down on the sofa. Wanting to hold her more and truly never let her go, I take her seemingly exhausted body fully into my arms and sit between Damen and Sam. “What happened,” Sam asks Trinity. “I saw glimpses of death and destruction in her mind. It was incredibly painful. Then, there was a bright light and after a void.” Trinity says while rubbing his goatee. “Bridges are rare, to begin with. During the reincarnation process for many souls, they have the choice of which soul path they want to try to succeed on.

--- Day forty-one, the first test of the southern grounds came. The land was better than Luna expected. More game, more shelter, more water. Take the left one. It leads toward the old river crossing. We can lose them in the water.” I pulled the reins left without question. The horse veered sharply, branches whipping at our faces. Darius groaned as the movement jarred his wound, but his arm tightened around me again, stubborn and strong.

“To kill them. Trust us. This has been one fucking fucked up week.” They turned towards Havermouth. The normal bridge crossing was lost in water, but they headed towards the old train bridge which had been built higher on the bank. Both driver and passenger focused on the road ahead of them as the driver straddled the railway lines with the wheels of the 4WD and slowly made his way across. The passenger sighed out a breath as they reached the other side. “I fucking hate that bridge.”
