Maya looked at her friends, then at the helicopter, the gold light humming inside her veins. It pulled her forward.
She grabbed the ladder and started climbing, pain screaming through her broken leg. Julian followed, then David, Toby, and Bianca.
The helicopter lifted over the city—lights flickering, fires burning, everything coming apart. Out on the horizon, the mountain glowed. The creatures swarmed there, a living cloud, purple and gold.
