There was a metallic click sound on rocks. The eyes of Tyra opened. “They discovered us.” I could see movement of trees through the broken windows. Black figures falling down, coming down to the ground with no sound. Council Scouts. Their metal limbs shone in the dark, and their faces were covered by black visors. The latter one knelt and examined the ground with a sort of instrument. It stopped and cocked its head. Then it said into a communicator, “Target found, everything is united, communicate in thirty seconds."

When they got outside Scarlett noticed something odd right off – their usual car was gone and instead there sat an unfamiliar vehicle parked on the curb outside with its engine idling impatiently. “Romero?" She gestured toward the strange car with a look of confusion on her face. Romero's brow furrowed as he studied the car. "That's not our usual ride," he murmured quietly, quickly scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger. He ushered Scarlett back inside and closed the door behind them, keeping his grip on her arm until they were safely in her living room once more.

Mason spots the patrol first. ‘Alpha, there, near that fallen log! The patrol!’ ‘Stop yelling! We can hear you! Idiot.’ Chastises Jason. He and Mason are litter mates, both with brown fur with white patches on their heads and paws. Mason also has a white patch on his tail. It’s the only difference between them. As we get closer to the patrol, I notice their agitation and it’s unnerving. What is it about this human? ‘Alpha.’ Greets one of the guards with a bow. I turn to him.

he mutters. "At least my claws are not like yours," I bark back, my chest heaving as my innermost thoughts burst through my teeth. "My wolf does not go around lifting one she-wolf up in the mud and supporting another female's weight before the whole pack!" Fletcher freezes on the leather seat, his eyes turning wide. Realizing my tongue spoke words it should have kept buried, I quickly shut my mouth and stare hard out at the pine trees. In the end, the Lead Scout drops his ears first. He restarts the wagon. "Let my paws carry you back to your cave."

Mike nods at me and we leave the building together. Zeus and I are both excited to get to Patty’s to see our girls. I feel like I am speeding like a mad man but only crawling like a turtle. It seems like it takes forever to get there. Finally I pull up to Patty’s. The diner is packed, and I see Patty inside hustling about. I look into the surrounding trees and see the glowing eyes of several of my pack members, in wolf form, patrolling the space to protect their Luna.

Damien POV Mr Vance opened the car door, and Leo climbed in, settling Scout on his lap. I slid in beside him while Vance took the front passenger seat. The car pulled away from the training centre, and for a moment, there was only the sound of the engine and Scout's quiet panting. Then Leo spoke up, his voice still a little wobbly from earlier. "Papa?" "Yes?" "Can we go to the dog park?" He looked up at me with those wide eyes, still red-rimmed from crying. "Scout would like it. And... I want to play with her outside."

"Tell me exactly what happened." The scout swallowed painfully. "We were patrolling the eastern timber routes." His breathing shook. "There were six of us." Damon finally spoke. His voice sounded strange. Too calm. Dangerously calm. "Where was Ethan?" The scout looked at him. "With us." Ethan Cross. Seventeen years old. Tall. Stubborn. Smart enough to be useful. Young enough to think he was invincible. The scout wiped blood from his mouth. "We found signs of movement near the ridge."

--- Rage followed Rex on his first patrol into the North. The grey wolf was too old to run much anymore. But its grandson, the small grey wolf Sylvan had brought back from the forest, was already grown. Rage had named him Firepaw—for the patch of dark red fur on his right front paw. He walked behind Rex with Firepaw at his side, across the ice plains for a whole day. When he returned, his boots were covered in frozen soil and ice chips. He ran to Luna and held up the small handful of thistle root tendrils clutched in his fist for her to see.

Korra's hand went to the dagger at her belt, the one Councilor Damien had gifted her after the battle, and she forced herself to breathe slowly. "Sera, Maya, scout move ahead. Rok and Dax, secure our rear. Finn, come with me. Thalia, center position." They moved like a well-oiled machine despite this being their first patrol together. Korra felt a surge of pride that they trusted her commands without question. The blood trail led to a small clearing where they found a young wolf, barely more than a pup, badly wounded and unconscious. "Rogue?" Dax asked nervously. "No pack scent," Finn confirmed. "Probably a loner caught by something bigger."

I threw my entire weight into the scout, my jaws locking onto his neck. We hit the dirt in a tangle of fur and teeth. The scout clawed at my chest, his nails digging into the healing scars. I ignored the pain. I clamped down harder, feeling the crunch of bone, until the scout went limp. I tossed the carcass aside and turned to Marek. The ghost-wolf stood still, his silver-white fur bristling. He looked at the dead scout, then at me. He didn't growl. He just dipped his head—a gesture of acknowledgment. Not a submission, but a thank you.
