Sprucepaw watched carefully as three cats stepped forward. Sure enough Wildheart was right about the patrol. A ginger-brown tom with tabby markings was the first to glare at Wildheart. Beside him was an older looking apprentice-aged cat. Her tortoiseshell fur was bristling with annoyance when she spotted Sprucepaw. Third to come forward was a dark gray, almost black tom with pale yellow eyes.

As I emerge from the false bright overheads of the garage into the darkness of predawn, I pop a wheelie then head for the pack gates. The orphan pups on their way to the packhouse for breakfast see me coming. They run to the edge of the road, waving, and laughing. I pop another wheelie to give them a thrill as I go by and they go wild, making me genuinely smile. I love pups and the ease of amusing them. I pick up speed as I near the front gate that is already sitting open for me. I accelerate again and peel out of the gate. M

Nymeria takes three hesitant steps before squeaking out another petite Pomsky puppy bark. “She’s telling you she is in control and this is her yard,” I inform. I already observe a sassy, alpha demeanor in my cuddly fur baby. As Jackson nears even closer, Nymeria squeaks out three barks. Her front paws hop off the grass with each bark. Jackson pauses, and she sits. Fighting the urge to pee, I cannot take this drawn-out introduction. I scoop up Nymeria and hand her to Jackson as I quickly scurry to the bathroom.

The girl in white hesitated for a moment before sitting next to me. I took a quick glance at her. Her skin was fair, but her ears were turning red—probably from nervousness. "So, what are two young girls like you doing out here on the Sunset Highway? It's not safe here," Eric started chatting with the girl in black. "Are there wild animals or bad guys here?" she asked. "Both." "Oh, no! Are you two bad guys?" she teased. "Do we look like it?" "Not really, but if we run into bad guys, you'll protect us, right?"

Cooper sat up and quit barking. Helen slowly stood up. I made my way down the steps and sprinted across the yard. Lyle stood near my truck, which was parked close to the shed. “River,” I called. I was nervous because I didn't recognize the vehicle. River came out with the four-wheeler. The four-wheeler was running. River killed it when he saw the Explorer that was coming up the driveway. River walked over to me and grabbed Lyle, and stood in front of me protectively.

Like two bears with the same sore tail, they stomped their way down the sidewalk that led to the underground parking where Khyle's car lay in wait. For his part, Gunner was wondering furiously why he'd been so eager to see him again, and then, oddly, why he'd agreed to let Khyle have the wheel today in the first place. "Yeah. I can," Khyle droned back. "When I get one." Gunner wanted to jam his hands deep into his coat pockets, keeping stretched white knuckles safely out of reach of his infuriating partner.
