My heart soared into my throat when I identified the voice; it belonged to one of our scouts. We hurried to the border, where a tiny pack of wolves was assembled. As we got closer, the smell of blood struck me like a solid barrier. "What's going on?" I insisted, making my way through the crowd. Then I noticed it. The scout's corpse was sprawled on the ground, disfigured beyond identification. His fur was stained with blood, and deep wounds marred his chest and neck. Something moves in the brush. I spin, grab, and haul the figure forward—young, fast, but not fast enough. He hits the ground hard, a blade clattering from his hand. "We've found something you need to see." The scout led them to a clearing further into the forest, and they followed him.

But I was Luna, and Luna did not ask permission. "We move at dusk," he said. I nodded and fell in line. The patrol moved to the outer border as the sun went down. I kept my eyes on the tree line, my hand near the blade at my hip, my breathing steady. The wolves around me moved in silence, trained and focused. I heard the sound of an animal before I saw anything. I turned, my hand going to my own blade, but the Silverling scout was already there. He came out of the dark fast, faster than I expected, his eyes locked on me.

Everyone looks up when I enter. Kade doesn’t smile. He just nods once. “Close the door,” he says. I do. The click feels louder than it should. He waits until I take the empty chair near Maya before he speaks. “Scouts again,” he says. “Closer this time. Three sets of prints within a mile of the southern perimeter. Same claw pattern Lila identified. Silver Moon.” A low growl rumbles from Darius. He doesn’t say anything, but his knuckles are white around the arm of his chair.

The scout said sucking in a broken breath. “Vampires?” Dante asked as his gaze sharpened. “Yes. But they were already inside.” The scout said and everything inside me went still. “How many dead?” I asked. “Too many.” He said as his mouth trembled. “Where’s Kyle?” Dante asked. “Alive. Furious.” The scout managed to say. The scout grabbed my wrist suddenly and his fingers were slick with blood. “They knew the patrol routes. They knew the weak doors and the blind spots. They moved through the packhouse like someone had walked them in.” He said.
