He carefully made a four with his legs that were nervously trembling as he traced his pencil on the portrait— afraid that he'd make a mistake. He stopped for a brief moment and went on to take a sip of orange juice. "And-d-d…done!" He expressed happily while exhaling deep breaths of relief. His eyes that were glowing with glee averted themselves from the portrait, towards a void of blackness that was decorated by birthstone-blue stars in the shapes of pentagrams.

He untied the ribbon, unrolling the paper flat across the oak desk between us. It was an ancient, hand-drawn illustration, a majestic, glowing stag standing beneath a blood-red moon, its antlers branching out into beautiful silver markings that mirrored the exact structure and patterns of the mark on my upper thigh. Surrounding the stag were figures in ancient royal robes, their hands raised in reverence. My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the drawing, my skin going cold as a familiar, rhythmic hum vibrated deep beneath my left thigh. "What is this?" I whispered.

“You’re doing good. You just need to make him thicker.” He edged over to her side and picked up a black crayon. After looking at her for permission, he drew some new lines and colored them in. “Orcas are massive. Like underwater tanks.” “That does look better,” she signed. She pushed a bucketful of markers over to his side of the poster. “Here, why don’t you do the orcas, and I’ll do the bubbles and seaweed. Where did I put the glitter?” Ethan laughed. “I guess bubbles are shiny.”
