My mind was moving fast.
Darren uncrossed his arms. “You felt it,” he said.
Not a question.
“The whole academy felt it,” I replied.
“It wasn’t just power,” Darren said. His voice had lost that usual edge he used like armor. He was speaking plainly now. “It had a signature. Like something old just… announced itself.”
“An ancestral mark,” Percy said from the doorway.
Both Darren and I looked at him.
Percy stepped fully into the room and let the door close behind him. He was still holding his notebook. It was open, and I could see from across the room that the last few lines were written differently — shorter, rushed. The way Percy wrote when something mattered.
